Hands up, who loves summer?! There’s nothing better than being outdoors in this beautiful country, whether that’s heading to the beach, hiking, golfing, fishing and more. But at the same time, we all know that getting too much sun on our skin can be a bad thing, leading to possible sunburn, dehydration and skin cancer.

So, we’ve compiled a list of ways you can enjoy the outdoors while still being sun-smart!

Be shady.

During 10am and 4pm, seek out the shade, whether that’s in the form of a tree, a pavilion or erect a large umbrella. It doesn’t matter what, just make sure you’re out of the sun.

Cover up.

We get it. It’s not always fun covering up when it’s ridiculously hot outside. If covering up with clothing isn’t an option, invest in a long sleeve rashie, UV blocking glasses and a broad-brimmed hat.

Sunscreen. Cover your entire body 30 minutes before you head outside with a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. And most importantly, if you’re outside for an extended period of time, or are swimming, then reapply your sunscreen every two hours.

Selfie skin check.

Each month, take the time to give your skin a self-assessment. Check it from head to toe and note any unusual markings. Anything that seems odd, book in with your skin physician immediately.

Book a skin exam.

Every year it’s wise to visit your physician for a professional skin cancer examination. This ensures early detection of skin cancers and immediate commencement of treatment.

When was your last skin cancer check? If you’ve been enjoying the great outdoors and haven’t had a recent skin cancer check, head to our SKIN CANCER section to find out more and CONTACT US to book your appointment today.
